Once again Huntsville Captures top honors for Engineering - Feb 2015

While the city Huntsville was locked into a snow and ice cycle in February and March, organizations have bestowed titles of top engineering city on Huntsville.

Forbes and NerdWallet have announced that Huntsville is the best place for engineers. By far away and an easy pick among the organizations Huntsville stood out the most. Not only that but reading further into the article Decatur, AL also made the list, making the metro area very strong indeed in terms of an engineering powerhouse. The hidden gem of the Huntsville area is once again proudly recognized.

Also sneaking in on another list. Huntsville managed to get into the top 15 of top cities for pay in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) jobs. With the above awards of engineering, these two can easily seen being hand in hand which looks back at another list by Wallethub showing Huntsville on the list for most educated cities.

Last Weekend's Roundup

Just a quick post on last weekend.  The Team went out last weekend and popped in at several spots around Huntsville in the many events which were ongoing.  (And thankfully for the good weather)

Friday, the Team strolled Bridgestreet in the morning for a few hours before settling in the afternoon at The Gem, Jewelry, & Mineral Show at the VBC.

Saturday, it seems everyone was at the Huntsville Ghost Walk to hear the stories and see the historical homes during the 2.2 mile trek.  When our group led by Robert Reeves came back to the starting point, there were many more people on the four corners waiting for their turn to go for the 8PM Start.  The amount of people that came out was overwhelming to see.

Sunday, we enjoyed ourselves immensely at the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll.  Like the Huntsville Ghost Walk on the previous day, Maple Hill Cemetery was completely packed full of people.  The crowds which surrounded the Huntsville Historical Figures where bustling at the seams.  The Black Widow of Hazel Green, Elizabeth Dale Gibbons could even have her pick of any of the multitudes of men in attendance.
We even managed to take a nice picture of Mary Bibb as she talked about herself and her tomb behind her.

All in all it was a very fun weekend but exhausting to try and make all the wonderful events.  Going to all the events was well worth it for both self enjoyment, involvement in the community, as well as interacting with other people we met along the way.  So if something like these events comes again we'll go again, and we can only hope you will as well!

Its June, Everyone's thinking about hitting the pool but what about Safety?

Just a short post today, but quite an interesting read.  We came across this last week from the National Association of Home Builders, or NAHB for short, and thought it would be great to share with everyone.  Everyone knows at least someone with a pool.  Below are tips that NAHB has put together. Enjoy!

swimming pool safety should include fencing and other layers of protection
Summer is just around the corner! Spending time in the back yard in the swimming pool and with the grill going is a great way to enjoy time with friends and family. However, it’s important to blend fun with safety.

While the pool is a great place to have fun and relax, it is an unfortunate reality that drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children nationwide. Collapsing decks and open fire from grills and firepits are also other hazards that can be easily avoided with a few safety tips.

Fencing: Isolate the swimming pool with a minimum four-foot-high enclosure to temporarily close off a pool, spa, or hot tub not being used when children are visiting. Make sure it has a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Safety covers: Install an impenetrable casing that completely covers the pool, spa, or hot tub to prevent access to the water when there is no supervision.  Make sure to cover portable hot tubs and padlock them.

Alarms: Get an alarm, which are available for doors, fences, and as a clip-on for children, to detect unwanted entrances to your pool, spa, or hot tub.

Rope and float lines: Place a rope or float line across the pool to let swimmers know where the deep end separates from the shallow end.

Rescue equipment: Locate equipment such as a life ring or shepherd's hook near the pool in an easily accessible spot, and ensure they are kept in good condition. These can be used to pull someone to safety when in trouble.

Install drain covers: Suction entrapment is an unfortunate hazard in some swimming pool designs where circulation drains, which children like to play with, create a strong suction and hold a child or even a grown man underwater. Make sure drain covers are installed properly.

Posted emergency information: Post CPR information and warning signs, as well as the emergency telephone number -- 911 -- near the pool, spa, or hot tub.

Deck inspection: Every spring, have a professional remodeler or inspector check that your deck or balcony is in stable condition, particularly after a heavy winter of snow or rain. Look for termite or insect damage, decaying wood, and that all bolts and screws are tightened. Clean any leaves and mildew that can cause the surface to be slippery.

Railings and banisters: Rails should be at least 36 inches tall and spaced no more than 4 inches apart, so small children can’t squeeze through them. Any open space behind stair tread should also be no more than 4 inches wide. Banisters and rails should be secure.

Grills, firepits and outdoor fireplaces: Any open flames should be operated with close supervision. Never leave any unattended, including candles, and keep them away from flammable surfaces.

Outside telephone: Keep a cordless or poolside telephone nearby so you don’t leave children unattended while you answer the phone. It’s also a good idea to have one handy to summon help, if needed.

These are great ways to help ensure that your family remains safe while enjoying time in the backyard. It is important to remember, however, that these should not replace adult supervision.  When children have access to any body of water, near an open flame or on a deck, a designated adult should always be alert and aware.

Today's Tidbit:  Always remember to keep your pools clean and areas around it free of debris and toys.

Highlighting a Community under Active Construction: Lendon at Jones Valley

This week we take a quick peek at one of South Huntsville's newest communities, Lendon at Jones Valley.
This new construction venture in the Jones Valley Commercial District has been called the Providence of South Huntsville.  Meaning it will have a similar layout and type of community as was constructed in Providence community on University Drive.  The location of Lendon at Jones Valley will be between Four Mile Post Road and Carl T. Jones, behind Target, Barnes & Noble, Pets Mart, and movie theater.

Currently Lendon is offering Square Footage as low as 600 in a Carriage House to the limit of 5200 for an Estate House.  However, it was discussed that there are possible home sites holding up to 8000 sqft.

Construction started just over 1 month ago on the 250 home sites with 100 flats on 80 acres.  According to representatives of Lendon the styles of architecture will be Classical Traditional, Neoclassical, European and American.  These new homes will be expected to have upkeep of strict landscape and hard scape to maintain the standard of living that the Lendon wants to present.

We wish the developers all the best in this new endeavor.

More information about Lendon can be found with this link.

Highlighting A Mortgage Lender

Today the decision was reached to highlight a mortgage lender.  Supreme Lending under Shannon Fortner has always provided us with the best of service.  They have never ceased to amaze us with the amount of hard work, good attitude, and wonderful quality of their work.

Originally Shannon Fortner and his team were with Countrywide Home Loans before the company collapsed amid financial troubles and political corruption which included waived points, lender fees and company borrowing rules for members of the Democratic Party of the United States.  This led the team to W.R. Starkey in which they had a troubling relationship due to the W.R. Starkey's over bureaucratic methods.  The Shannon Fortner team didn't stay long before they moved over to their present place at Supreme Lending.  Although they have moved from company to company, the once constant is their fantastic services they have provided to their clients.  Their strong unit has proved time and time again, their eagerness to do as much as they can for the benefit of their clients and agents.

Thank you for everything Shannon, Beverly, and Debbie.  You've always been wonderful to work with and provided many great times.
